The Kerkis Greek fonts which were used to typeset this book are cˆ Department of Mathematics, University of the Ægæan. Introduction. This edition of Greek New Testament contains two revisions of the Textus Receptus and two other recensions of the Text, as described in the following paragraphs. It was prepared in strict accordance with the following basic principles: • No variations, however strongly supported by the Greek manuscripts and printed editions have been introduced into the text but were relegated to the footnotes. The total number of footnotes in this revision is 7456. • While the modern chapter and verse numbering was preserved for the sake of convenient reference, the elements that rely on human interpretation, such as capital letters and punctuation, were completely disregarded as they have no support from the ancient manuscripts. • A special symbol G is used as a verse terminator. The following four main textual recensions are fully collated in the base text and the footnotes of this book. T Textus Receptus, Stephanus 1550 edition. This is the base text of the present edition. Both the original 1550 edition and the Cambridge edition which was prepared by F.H.A. Scrivener in 1892 were used in the preparation of this work. K Scrivener, 1894. This is the text underlying the English Authorized Version of 1611 (K stands for KJV). M Majority Text. Byzantian Text recension. V Alexandrian recension (V stands for Vatican). This is the text of the Greek New Testament which comes from the manuscripts of the Alexandrian recension. The decision as to which recension to choose as a body of the text and which to place in the footnotes is pretty much arbitrary. However, once decided, it was never deviated from. Thus, the main text represents exactly that of Stephanus 1550 Textus Receptus, whilst the readings in the footnotes correspond exactly to the recensions represented by their respective symbols. In effect, this book contains “four books in one”, i.e., assumes that the reader will work with the footnotes as diligently as with the main text. There is nothing intrinsic that would make any reading in the footnotes preferred to iv that of the text or vice versa and, in each case, the reader must consult the Spirit of Truth, to be guided by the way of wisdom into the light of understanding. In some cases (such as Mat27:49 or Luk 6:4) the main recensions were not sufficient and I had no choice but to quote the individual MSS directly. The following abbreviations are used to refer to the manuscripts in the footnotes. @ Codex Sinaiticus, IV century. A Codex Alexandrinus, V century. B Codex Vaticanus (no book of Revelation), IV century. C Codex Ephraemi Rescriptus, V century. D Codex Bezae Cantabrigiensis, V century. The word on which there is a textual variant note has a little circle. If the textual variant affects multiple words then only the end of the first word is marked with the circle. Also, some peculiar cases like Joh 16:33 necessitated inclusion of extra information in the footnote. The apocryphal books are prefixed with an x. For instance, First Machabees is x1ma.vul contained in vul-x1ma.zip. It should be noted Jerome translated Psalms from the Hebrew as well as the Greek. Accordingly, there were 2 Psalms texts, and these are called ps-h.vul and ps-g.vul. Jerome (c. 347-420) began his work in 382. In 386 he moved to Bethlehem and worked on the Old Testament. He began on using the Greek LXX, but quickly decided to work directly from the Hebrew. In 405 the Old Testament, as well as the rest of the New Testament was completed. Due to older Latin texts in circulation, Jerome’s work was not widely popular until the ninth century. The influence of Jerome’s Bible was quite extensive. For instance, the first knowledge of the Bible in the British Isles was from the Vulgate. The most current and correct copy of this Bible can be obtained from The Bible Foundation. Septuagint arrangement [Released 1996 December 08] [Updated 1996 December 25] Dedicated to the Memory of Elliott Harry Aldridge (1910 May 19 - 1990 November 01) About This Edition: The editor has assembled this text to approximate the arrangement of the Greek Septuagint version of Daniel. The Vulgate contains sections both from the Hebrew/Aramaic and Greek versions, but some of the verses exclusive to the Greek were transplanted to the end. The History of Susanna (13:1-64) and Bel and the Dragon (13:65- 14:42) are at the end of the source text. The editor has found conflicting information as to the place of these in the Septuagint. This may be because there were at least three ancient editions of Daniel in Greek: a pre-Christian text, a second century version by Theodotion, and a third century revision by Origen. This edition observes the arrangement suggested by the source text, which probably follows the Theodotion version. In accordance with the source text, the Song of the Three Children (3:24-90) remains in chapter 3; although absent from the Hebrew/Aramaic version, it was not moved to the end. Septuagint arrangement [Released 1996 December 08] [Updated 1996 December 25] i Dedicated to the Memory of Agnes Dorothy [Baxter] Aldridge (1909 November 22 - 1996 April 20) About This Edition: The editor has assembled this text to approximate the arrangement of the Greek Septuagint version of Esther. The Vulgate contains sections both from the Hebrew and Greek versions, but the verses exclusive to the Greek were transplanted to the end. These verses are specific to different events in the story of Esther. Placed out of the context of the body of book, as in the Vulgate, these verses can make for difficult reading. The guide for this arrangement of the text is The New American Bible. [NAB] Thomas Nelson Publishers: Nashville 1987. The chaper:verse numbers follow this edition with a few exceptions. Verse 15:1 is a restatement of verse 4:8b and may have been added to the Vulgate to put the following verses in context; it is not in the NAB. After much thought the editor has decided to label it verse B:7.5 even though it is an awkward designation. Verse 4:17 is left unnumbered in the NAB; in this text it is verse C:0. None of verses included in the source text has been removed from this edition. Our Changes The Bible and this file of additional information have been marked up for HTML display. Additions: – Table of contents. – Chains between books. – References at the first of each book to the start of each chapter. – Tags which provide the ability to cross-reference from various commentaries and topical works to individual verses. Changes: – Chapter subheadings in Psalms have been positioned between the chapter heading and first verse as a fifth level heading. – Subheadings in Psalms 119 have been positioned before the verse in which they appear as fifth level headings. – Trailing comments at the end of the New Testament books have been rendered as third level headings. Notes: Verse renumbering has occurred in 30 books to conform to the Authorized Version so all reference scripture links will point to equivalent scriptures in all versions. The Psalms have been almost completely renumbered from the original sources since Psalms 9 and 10 were joined together, leading all further Psalms to be off by one until Psalms 147 which starts with verse 12. We have attempted to split verses properly where needed, but since we aren’t Latin scholars we may have erred in some cases. Verse joining was much easier and is probably correct. Further work in this area needs done in the non-canonical (or Apocryphal) books. The text of this on-line Bible is believed to be in the public domain.
